Psychology, Leadership & Working Life

My interest in people, development and working life has been a consistent thread throughout my career.

I began my professional career in training and development before moving into management roles and subsequently specialising in occupational psychology. Since becoming a Chartered Psychologist in 2009, I have worked extensively with senior managers, directors, executives and other professionals across public, private and not-for-profit organisations.

Over the course of my career, my work has encompassed leadership development, executive coaching, organisational consultancy, professional supervision, facilitation and the design and evaluation of evidence-based development programmes.

This breadth of experience matters to the way I work today. I bring a psychological perspective while remaining grounded in the realities of organisational life and the pressures, relationships and responsibilities that people encounter at work.

Specialist Expertise in Self-Compassion & Compassionate Leadership

For almost 15 years, a central focus of my work has been understanding how self-compassion can support people in their working lives and how this provides an important foundation for compassionate leadership.

My Professional Doctorate in Business and Occupational Psychology explored the development of self-compassion in the workplace. This led to the design and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to help people develop self-compassion in practical and accessible ways.

I subsequently developed the Self-Compassion at Work Programme and Compassionate Leadership Coaching Programme, bringing together psychological research, evidence-based practice and my experience of working with leaders and organisations.

My approach to self-compassion is not about avoiding difficulty or lowering expectations. It is about developing the psychological capacity to recognise and respond skilfully to difficult thoughts, emotions and experiences, while maintaining perspective and taking purposeful action.

Research, Publication & Professional Contribution

Research and evaluation are integral to my work. I believe that psychological interventions should be informed by the best available evidence and that we should evaluate whether what we do actually makes a meaningful difference.

My doctoral research into developing self-compassion in healthcare professionals was subsequently published as a peer-reviewed randomised waitlist-control trial in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in 2024.

Alongside my research and practice, I contribute to the wider psychology and business psychology professions through conference presentations and professional events. I have presented my research and practice at national conferences of the British Psychological Society and the Association of Business Psychologists, as well as at a range of other professional events and forums. My presentations have explored self-compassion at work, compassionate leadership, coaching psychology and professional supervision.

The Compassionate Leadership Coaching Programme was also Highly Commended in the Association of Business Psychologists Awards for Excellence in Leadership Development in 2024.

Professional & Academic Experience

Alongside my consultancy practice, I have contributed to the education and development of psychologists and senior leaders.

I was an Academic Teaching Fellow on the Professional Doctorate in Organisational Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London, supervising doctoral candidates working towards professional Chartered Psychologist and HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist status.

I was also an Academic Tutor at Alliance Manchester Business School, The University of Manchester, on the MSc in Healthcare Leadership delivered as part of the nationally recognised NHS Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme. My work included developing senior healthcare leaders through coaching, action learning, facilitation and academic supervision.

These academic roles sit alongside many years of applied practice and reflect an important part of how I work: connecting psychological evidence with the realities of leadership and organisational life.

A Little More About Me

I am based in Manchester and work with individuals and organisations across the UK, predominantly online.

Away from work, I particularly enjoy walking and spending time outdoors. Being in nature provides valuable space to think and reflect and is also one of the reasons I offer Outdoor Executive Coaching for clients who value the opportunity to step away from their usual working environment.

I also enjoy reading, cooking, yoga, completing jigsaws and spending time with my family.
