Higher Education

Higher education staff and leaders are working in increasingly demanding environments. Financial pressures, organisational restructuring, increasing workloads, rising expectations and uncertainty can place significant demands on staff wellbeing, working relationships and leadership.

Self-compassion and compassionate leadership offer evidence-based psychological approaches that can help people respond constructively to these pressures. Self-compassion can support wellbeing, resilience and recovery from setbacks, while compassionate leadership can help leaders strengthen psychological safety, connection and collaboration during periods of change.

The two Higher Education resources below bring together research, evidence and practical insights on staff wellbeing, self-compassion and compassionate leadership in a changing university context.

Higher Education Evidence & Discussion Paper

Self-Compassion in Higher Education: An Evidence-Based Perspective on Supporting Staff Wellbeing

This discussion paper brings together current research and practical insights on staff wellbeing and self-compassion in Higher Education. It considers the pressures experienced by academic and professional services staff, explains the evidence for self-compassion, and explores its relevance to wellbeing, stress, burnout, resilience and compassionate university cultures.

The paper also considers self-compassion alongside organisational responsibility and summarises evidence from Dr Amanda Super’s peer-reviewed randomised waitlist control trial of a brief online self-compassion intervention with 190 professionals. Participants demonstrated significant improvements in self-compassion and mental wellbeing, together with significant reductions in perceived stress and burnout.
